www.alaffia.com/pages/alaffia-foundation godschildrenministry.org All around the world there are very poor families with very poor children. It is important for a child to receive an education because then they can understand how to find their place better in the world. Children need attention while their parents are busy providing for them. In America it is a lot easier to attend school because a bus system is provided for the school children, but in places like Togo, West Africa there is no bus system. It is a dangerous task for a child to attend school but it is also a necessary task. When I visited what was formerly known as "the slave coast" I saw a lot of children that were very poor. I knew that they were poor because I recognized a lot of them would wear the same clothes one day after the other. A lot of the clothes were dirty and had holes in them. The children were very excited to receive an empty plastic water bottle. In fact, they fought over them. My group of American volunteers came prepared with our own water bottles so we would not catch a disease from the water there. The children had to fetch water from the wells in the area. Many of them carried the water in an empty gasoline container. The children also seemed very fascinated by things like cellphones and cameras. They loved viewing themselves in the screen. The kindergarten and first grade kids carry the stools (pictured in the artwork above) over their heads across the field. Some children sat on the ground. The kindergarten class room was a very sad site to see. It seemed as though it was a muddy and gutted out building. We were informed that they slept on the floor in the dirt. There was no electricity or running water. The snakes go where they want and they don't care. The country does not pay for the kindergarten classrooms. That age is so precious. They are too old to carry around and too young to leave by themselves. Many women in the country carried around their children on their backs in slings. That is easy for a two year old child but not a 5 or 6 year old child. They need to be watched over. It seems to me God is watching over these young ones. Life is so fragile. Precious are Gods children.
